DesignO Pricing Part 4 : Learn to configure product pricing based on square area unit

This guide shows you how to create pricing for any product where the cost depends on the square area, for example: vinyl banners, posters, backdrops, and other wide-format items.

Step 1 - Prepare your pricing formula and upload your CSV

Before setting anything in DesignO, define your pricing logic clearly.
For example:

Following this, we will explore the pricing configuration process. An Excel sheet has been prepared to outline the pricing parameters.

For instance, the base price per square foot is set within different size tiers. Specifically, for sizes ranging from six to sixty square feet, the price is $1.20 per square foot. This pattern continues for other size ranges as well. Additionally, if a customer requests that the banner be printed on both sides, an upcharge of 75% of the base price is applied for second side printing.

Using standard material incurs no additional charge, as it is included in the base price. However, upgrading to premium material incurs an additional cost of $1.20 per square foot.

Moreover, opting for lamination results in an additional charge, which varies depending on the square footage of the banner. For sizes between six and sixty square feet, the lamination cost is $2.00 per square foot, with similar adjustments for other size ranges.

Regarding the hanging method, if no grommets are applied, there is no charge. However, for metal grommets, a flat fee of $9.90 is charged, and for ultra-strong adhesive tapes, a one-time fee of $4.90 applies. Wind flaps are not included by default, but can be added for a fixed fee of $9.99. Lastly, if pole pockets are chosen as the hanging method, there is a 20% upcharge of the base price for left and right pole pockets, and a 25% upcharge for top and bottom pole pockets.

Let's explore how to apply a specific formula in DesignO using the DesignO pricing module. We begin with a sample product that has been configured in DesignO. The initial step involves ensuring that the e-commerce pricing feature is deactivated.

Proceeding to the product configuration,

it is evident that customers are allowed to order any quantity of the product, with the minimum and default order quantity set at one, and a maximum limit of five hundred units. Next, we examine the sizing options that have been established.

Here, the sizing options match those detailed in the Excel sheet, with default dimensions set to two feet by three feet. The subsequent phase involves setting up custom options tailored to specific requirements.

Among these options are upgrades to premium, printed sides, grommets, ball pockets, lamination, wind flaps, and Pantone plus color bridge coated requirements. For the upgrade to premium, options include standard and heavy-duty sixteen-ounce UV print material. In terms of printed sides, there are two choices: one-sided or two-sided print. Regarding grommets, three alternatives are provided.

To visually represent the grommets, an image dropdown is used instead of a standard dropdown.

This approach is also applied to

ball pockets. The lamination option is presented as a

swatch,

while wing flaps and

Pantone color inputs are included as part of the customization options, with Pantone color input specifically designated as a

text box. After setting up the custom options, some

exception rules are established. Since only one hanging method is supported—either grommets or ball pockets—an exception rule is defined such that if

the grommet option, including metal grommets or ultra adhesive tabs, is selected, then the

ball pocket options are hidden. Conversely, if

a ball pocket option, whether it be left, right, or top and bottom ball pockets, is selected, then the

grommet options become unavailable.

Upon configuring the product, the next step involves examining the pricing configuration. Initially, based on the Excel sheet, the decision was made to opt for size-based pricing. This entails setting varying prices for different size ranges. For instance, the price for a range of six to sixty square feet is established at $1.20. Other size ranges have been priced accordingly.

Following the determination of the base price, the focus shifts to custom option prices. Given that none of the options possess an absolute price, this segment is bypassed in favor of setting custom options prices.

At this juncture, the price for wind flaps is showcased. Remarkably, the price remains constant across all sizes and quantities, pegged at a flat fee of $9.99 when wind flaps are incorporated.

Continuing, the pricing for lamination is addressed. The cost is calculated per square foot of the banner, varying according to different size tiers, thereby leading to distinct prices for various size ranges.

Subsequently, the pricing for pole pockets is outlined. Unlike other options, its cost is independent of the ordered size but is computed per square unit area. The charge is set at 20% for pole pockets on the left and right, and 25% if located on the top and bottom. Grommets, on the other hand, entail a flat fee, unaffected by size or quantity. The printed side pricing adopts a percentage logic, calculated as a percentage of the base price. Specifically, the second side printing is priced at 75% of the base price. Moreover, if premium material is utilized, the cost is defined in dollar terms, consistent across all sizes, and calculated per square unit area at $1.20 per square unit area. This comprehensive approach ensures all pricing options are meticulously established.

Upon finalizing these pricing options, the configurations can either be saved directly

or saved as a template. This facilitates the reuse of the same pricing formula for other products, thereby streamlining the process and conserving time.

After saving the necessary settings,

we proceed to examine a product that has been configured in our sample Magento store. Initially, the default pricing for a 3x2 banner is shown, totaling $7.20. This default pricing is based on the calculation of $1.20 per square foot for a banner of six square feet, confirming that the pricing is accurate.

Next, we explore the scenario of ordering a larger banner size, specifically 12x8, equating to 96 square feet. In this range, the price calculation is straightforward—$1.00 per square foot, leading to a total of $96.00.

Upon opting for premium material, an additional charge of $1.20 per square foot is applied, resulting in a new total of $211.20 after adding this upcharge to the base price, confirming the accuracy of the calculation.

If we then decide to add metal grommets to the order, an upcharge of $9.90 is included, updating the total price to $221.10, which matches our expectations.

Interestingly, adding metal grommets results in the removal of pole pocket options from the selection.

However, when opting out of grommets, the pole pocket options become available again,

allowing for the application of top and bottom pole pockets. This adjustment alters the price to $235.20. After removing this option,

and instead choosing left and right pole pockets, which incurs a charge equal to 20% of the base price,

the final pricing is calculated to be $230.20. This demonstrates the dynamic pricing adjustments based on the selected customizations.

Ultimately, by applying the top and bottom pole pockets once more,

we observe how each selection impacts the final cost, showcasing the flexibility and precision of the pricing model in the Magento store setup.

Therefore, it would account for twenty-five percent of this price.

Consequently, the correct amount should be two hundred thirty-five point two, confirming the accuracy of the pricing strategy. This demonstrates the method for establishing square area-based pricing in DesignO for any product.
